Short answer: AI assistants cite local businesses that are easy to verify. That means one consistent name, address and phone everywhere online, an actively maintained Google Business Profile, a steady flow of recent reviews, pages that answer questions in 40–60 words, and mentions on sites you don't own. Most Nagpur businesses fail on the last two.
What "getting cited by AI" actually means
When someone in Nagpur asks ChatGPT for a good interior designer, or types a question into Google and gets an AI Overview instead of ten blue links, the assistant does not show a ranked list. It writes an answer and names two or three businesses.
You are either in that answer or you do not exist for that query.
This is a different game from ranking. Research reported through 2026 found that only about 12% of ChatGPT's citations match URLs sitting on Google's first page, and roughly 45% overlap between businesses winning the Google map pack and businesses AI assistants actually recommend. Ranking well helps. It does not carry you across automatically.
The gap is also why this is still winnable. In most Nagpur categories, nobody is working on it yet.
How big is this in India right now?
Bigger than most owners assume, and growing faster than the local market is reacting.
BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey found that 45% of consumers had used an AI tool to find a local business recommendation in the past year. Google's AI Overviews now appear on a majority of searches. For a Nagpur shop owner, the practical version of this is simple: a share of the people who used to land on your website after a search now never see a search result at all. They see a paragraph, and a name in it.
Where do AI assistants pull local answers from?
Not from one place, and mostly not from your website.
Analysis of branded queries by Omniscient Digital found roughly 77% of citations come from off-page sources rather than the brand's own site. AirOps, reviewing over a billion citations, put third-party pages behind about 85% of brand mentions in AI search. Your website matters, but it is the smaller half of the picture.
The sources that carry the weight break down like this:
- Your Google Business Profile. Whitespark's 2026 study put GBP signals at roughly 32% of the controllable weight in local AI visibility — the single largest lever.
- Reviews across platforms. Around 16–20% of that weight, with recency, response rate and total count mattering most.
- Your own pages. About 19%. Necessary, not sufficient.
- Directories and aggregators. In India this means Justdial, IndiaMART, Zomato and Magicbricks depending on your category — the local equivalents of the Yelp and Tripadvisor patterns seen in Western data.
- Community discussion. Reddit accounts for roughly 21% of AI Overview citations and YouTube about 18.8%, per Averi.ai's analysis. r/nagpur is a smaller pond than r/mumbai, which cuts both ways.
Each assistant answers differently
Do not assume one fix covers all of them. Princeton's GEO research found only about 11% of cited domains were shared across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. A business that ChatGPT names confidently can be completely absent from Gemini's answer to the same question. Test all three separately.
The seven moves that actually earn citations
1. Fix your entity before anything else
An AI assistant will not recommend a business it cannot confidently identify. If your name, address and phone number differ between your Google Business Profile, your Justdial listing, your Facebook page and your website footer, the assistant reads that inconsistency as unreliability and quietly skips you.
We learned this one the hard way. For months, "kizenclicks" was being surfaced by Google as "kitchen click" — an unfamiliar brand name with inconsistent representation across the web gets guessed at rather than recognised. Fixing it took disambiguation work across every profile we owned. If your business name is a coined word, an abbreviation, or shares a name with something else in India, assume you have this problem until you have checked.
Audit your name across every listing you can find. Make them identical, down to the punctuation. And do not stuff keywords into your GBP name — "Best Emergency Plumber Nagpur" gets flagged as untrustworthy, not helpful.
2. Treat your Google Business Profile as a live database
Not a directory listing you filled in once in 2021. Complete every field, including services, service areas, hours and attributes. Post weekly. Answer the Q&A section yourself with real questions customers ask. Add photos with actual dates on them. Profiles left untouched for a month show measurable impression drops.
3. Build reviews with a rhythm, not a burst
Review velocity — a steady trickle — reads more credibly than fifty reviews appearing in one week. Respond to every review, including the bad ones, because response rate is itself a weighted signal. Pay attention to what reviewers write, not just the star count: an assistant asked for "a caterer in Nagpur good with Maharashtrian menus" is matching against review text, not ratings.
4. Write pages an assistant can lift from
This is where most Nagpur business websites lose. Long, unbroken paragraphs of company puffery give an assistant nothing to extract.
Instead, open every section with a direct answer in 40–60 words, then support it. Phrase your H2s as the questions customers actually ask. Keep one idea per paragraph. Attach a number, a source and a date to every claim you make — Princeton's GEO study (KDD 2024) found that adding statistics lifted visibility by up to 40%, and adding citations and quotations by up to 41%.
Practical test: read any paragraph on your site in isolation. Does it answer something on its own? If not, an assistant cannot use it.
5. Get mentioned on sites you do not own
Given that roughly three-quarters of citations come from off-page sources, this is where the leverage is — and where almost no Nagpur business is putting effort.
Realistic targets: local news and community sites, "best [category] in Nagpur" roundup articles (assistants love these lists — ask to be included), trade association and chamber pages, supplier and partner websites, and genuine participation in forums where your customers already ask questions. Never fabricate any of it; assistants cross-reference sources, and a claim only you make is a claim that gets discarded.
6. Clear the technical blockers
Three checks, none of which take long:
- Confirm GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended are not blocked in your robots.txt. Plenty of sites block them by accident via a template.
- If your site is built on React, Next.js or a similar framework rendering client-side, switch to server-side rendering or static generation. Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript — they see an empty shell.
- Add LocalBusiness schema with your services, service areas, hours and sameAs links to every verified profile you hold.
An honest caveat on that third point: Ahrefs' 2026 testing found that adding JSON-LD produced no measurable citation change in the 30 days afterwards, even though cited pages were nearly three times more likely to already carry it. Schema is worth having for clarity and for classic search. Do not expect it alone to move the needle.
7. Keep it fresh
Freshness is one of the few levers independent studies agree on. Ahrefs, analysing 17 million citations, found AI-cited content was 25.7% fresher on average than content ranking in classic organic results, with ChatGPT showing the strongest recency preference of the engines measured.
Set a quarterly review. Update prices, statistics and screenshots, and make sure your dateModified reflects the change.
How do I check whether AI is already recommending me?
Do this now — it takes five minutes and it is the only baseline that matters.
- Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in three tabs.
- Ask each the same question a customer would: "best [your category] in Nagpur", "who should I hire for [your service] in Nagpur", "[your category] near Dharampeth".
- Note which businesses get named, and which sources the assistant cites underneath.
- Ask each assistant directly what it knows about your business by name. Note anything wrong.
- Repeat monthly and keep the answers in a sheet.
Those cited sources are your target list. If Justdial and a local news site keep appearing, that is where your next month of effort goes.
How long does this take?
Faster than classic SEO at the content level, slower at the authority level. New or refreshed pages can begin earning citations within three to five days. Consistent visibility across multiple assistants typically takes two to four months of sustained work — comparable to traditional SEO timelines.
The early wins come from entity consistency, a completed Google Business Profile and LocalBusiness schema. The compounding wins come from review velocity and third-party mentions, and those do not arrive on a schedule.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. There is no ad mechanism for AI recommendations the way there is for Google Ads. Anyone in Nagpur selling you guaranteed placement inside AI answers is selling something that does not exist.
Is GEO different from SEO, or is it the same thing renamed?
Substantially overlapping, not identical. Whitespark's 2026 conclusion was that local search signals and AI search signals have effectively merged — the same inputs drive visibility across Google, Maps and the assistants. What changes is how you write: for extraction rather than for ranking, and with far more weight on mentions you do not control.
My business has no website. Can I still get cited?
Partially. A complete Google Business Profile plus strong directory presence and reviews can get you named in local recommendations. But without pages of your own, you cannot be cited for anything beyond your basic details — no expertise, no answers, no reason to be chosen over the next name on the list.
Do Hindi or Marathi queries work differently?
The underlying signals are the same, but the competition is thinner. Very few Nagpur businesses publish anything in Hindi or Marathi that an assistant can extract from. If a meaningful share of your customers ask questions in those languages, that is an open lane.
What is the single highest-impact thing to do this week?
Audit your name, address and phone number across every listing that mentions your business, and make them identical. It is unglamorous, it takes an afternoon, and it is the prerequisite for everything else on this list working.
Where to start
Run the five-minute visibility test above before you spend a rupee on anything. If you are already being named, find out which sources are carrying you and reinforce them. If you are not, start with your entity and your Google Business Profile — that is roughly a third of the controllable weight sitting in one place, and for most Nagpur businesses it is half-finished.
We do this work for MSMEs across Nagpur at KizenClicks — entity cleanup, GBP overhaul, extraction-ready content and monthly citation tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. If you want to know where you stand before committing to anything, ask us for an AI visibility check on your business.
